“The good news is...you came a long way. The bad news is…you went the wrong way.”
J. Cole
I once heard these words—on marble— by Brother Cole in his song “Love Yourz”, and it really got me thinking.
Imagine being a student who finished an exam—writing so beautifully, only to find out at the end that she answered the wrong questions.
Or Imagine a footballer (not a Super Eagle please) who dribbles his way through to score a magnificent goal, only to find out that he scored against his own team.
Imagine you built a skyscraper (come on, stop doubting for a second and just imagine it first), imagine spending all that time, the obvious effort and ‘endless’ funds put into developing something that grand. And imagine you winning and celebrating your well deserved success. Only for you to discover at the end that you built it on someone else’s land. Imagine!
I don’t even want to think about what that would look like if it ever happened, but for real, imagine!
Are you building where you are meant to be building, or you’re building on another man’s land?
Are you getting into tech because the whole world is, or do you have a reason that makes sense for you. Are you starting a business because of the pressures around, or staying at that job because you’re scared of what’s out there? Or maybe you are about to get into that relationship simply because it’s about time (I mean, look at your mates, right)?
Are you building where you are meant to be building, or you’re building on another man’s land?
I don’t have the answers to these questions, and it’s possible you may need to dig deep a bit to find them.
“Effort” does not always equal (true) progress. Many are going nowhere…fast!
And you? Where are you going?
Keep Breathing!
Thank you for this amazing piece, Agu! Absolutely, I believe in staying true to my path and focusing on the journey I'm meant to take.
Very profound! You are such a brilliant writer. And thank you for giving me deep points to think on🙏🏾
